It’s not set up for sporty driving, and while it’ll rotate eagerly at low speeds, it doesn’t offer the stiff-legged poise or feedback for higher-speed transitions. This Buick isn’t going to inspire you to press it hard through any corners. The Encore GX does a fine job of keeping road chop from chattering its way into the cabin, but bigger undulations in the road will overcome the Encore’s short wheelbase to put the whole car into motion. "The ride is comfortable, too, even with the Avenir’s larger 19-inch wheels.Big imperfections can jostle the GX, but a pleasant ride is one of the car's best qualities. The brakes are strong and inspire confidence, body roll is limited fairly well, and it has good maneuverability in small spaces. The Encore GX provides sufficient handling chops for easy-going daily driving, but it's not built for switchbacks or hard cornering. The 2024 Encore GX returns decent fuel economy estimates for a subcompact SUV. There’s a brief lag before the transmission shifts to accelerate, but I got used to that and found performance perfectly satisfactory." - The Detroit Free Press 137/162 for the base engine - has plenty of power for city and highway driving. It had the top drivetrain, a turbocharged 1.3L three-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. "I tested a top of the line Encore GX Avenir with all-wheel drive.Thankfully, the Encore GX feels peppier than its acceleration results suggest, particularly around town where the small turbo engine makes the most of its reasonable low-end grunt." - Car and Driver This is a bummer since the Encore GX's luxury-brand rivals offer more powerful engines and far quicker acceleration times. "An AWD Encore GX with the larger 1.3-liter four-cylinder required a slothful 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph.The nine-speed automatic is well suited to this motor, too, shifting smoothly with little hunting." - Autoblog It responds smoothly to inputs from the accelerator. It’s not going to win any drag races, but that’s not the point, and it doesn’t feel especially slow. Out on the road, though, we found it to provide adequate pep, especially at around-town speeds. Even with the bigger motor, it’s easy to be skeptical of the little three-cylinder’s ability to motivate the Encore GX. "Our tester was equipped with the 1.3-liter and all-wheel drive. The optional nine-speed automatic transmission works well, but the CVT gets mixed reviews.
